Chris Shays is out

CT voted Shays out. The Center-Right purge continues and the GOP is dwindling down to a regional extreme party.

Wiped-the-floor! Though at some level this saddens me--he was not the worst of the lot by a long shot, and in fact was among the best. I have somewhat of a soft spot for genuine New England Republicans. As opposed to carpetbaggers (Romney) and turncoats (Lieberman).

I'm with misha.
I'm kinda relieved Susan Collins pulled it off!

Absolutely. I was thinking about people like Lowell Weicker who was actually responsible for some progressive pieces of legislation. It is absolutely a travisty that the strain of libertarian republicans from the Northeast are being shed.

Shays was not the worst, but I will say he wasn't the best. He threw his lot with the GOP. I heard him interviewed this past winter on WNYC. He was asked why he didn't defect since he was at such odds with Bush and the mainstream of the GOP. He said he couldn't go Democrat because he believed in the free market. he could have come up with a better answer than that. At lest Lincoln Chaffee said it was a matter of loyalty.
